About Us FAQs

When should waterproofing be carried out?

Typically speaking, extensive waterproofing measures are best applied during the construction process. They can, however, still be done after a building is constructed, especially if you're experiencing issues like visible dampness, unpleasant odours, mould, and stains on walls and ceilings. If you notice any of these signs on your property, you should contact us at Fraser Coast Waterproofing right away.

Why is waterproofing important and where is it used?

People usually apply waterproofing membranes to balconies, terraces, swimming pools, gutters, concrete decks, concrete water tanks and basements, but they have many other uses too. They're designed to offer extra protection against harsh weather, hydrostatic pressure and sunlight, as well as pollutants like acids and chemicals.

What are the most common types of waterproofing?

There are different types of waterproofing which involve different techniques and materials. The method used will depend on where the job is being carried out. The most common types of waterproofing are:

  • Cementitious waterproofing – a type of breathable coating that can give concrete and masonry surfaces positive-and-negative-side waterproofing.
  • Liquid waterproofing membrane – a monolithic, fully-bonded, liquid-based coating suitable for roofs and surfaces like asphalt, bitumen and concrete.
  • Bituminous membrane – also known as asphalt, this is ideal for basements, below-ground structures and bridges.
  • Bituminous coating – a flexible protective coat suitable for surfaces such as concrete foundations.
  • Polyurethane liquid membrane – a liquid-applied system that provides a seamless finish to roofs, walkways and balconies.

How long does waterproofing last?

Basic waterproofing membranes should typically last at least 10 years. However, they can last for up to 20 years with proper maintenance and care, along with the right choices made during installation.

How many layers of waterproofing do I need?

It's widely suggested that two coats are needed for waterproofing, with each layer taking up to 24 hours to dry. Your waterproofing membrane may need extra sealant as well if you're laying flooring on top. This job, all in all, can take up to 4 days, especially if you want a thorough, professional finish. This is why, during any build, you should allow plenty of time for the waterproofing process.

What can damage waterproofing?

Numerous factors can damage waterproofing, so you should always be on the lookout for these. Below is a list of the most common causes of damage to waterproofing:

  • Incompatible waterproofing membranes
  • Application on an uneven surface
  • Application on a damp surface
  • Application on a contaminated surface
  • Lack of priming
  • Insufficient coverage/uneven application of a liquid membrane
  • Blistering
  • Faulty overlaps
  • Puncturing
  • Weathering and deterioration
  • Exposure to UV rays
  • Harsh weather conditions
  • Aggressive groundwater
  • Permanent ponding

If you suspect any of these issues may be damaging your waterproofing, it's best to contact our team at Fraser Coast Waterproofing as soon as possible for more advice.
